Unlike traditional photo editors that require installation or cloud uploads, Darkroom processes everything entirely within your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images are never transmitted to any server — they stay completely private on your device while you work.
Darkroom is organised into three intuitive panels. The left panel holds all tonal and color adjustments — exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, vibrance, saturation, clarity, sharpness, temperature, tint, fade, grain, and vignette. Every control is a smooth slider with a live numeric readout, so you always know exactly where your values sit.
The centre canvas shows your image in real time. Any adjustment you make is reflected immediately — no waiting, no loading. The right panel contains transform tools for rotation and flipping, a live RGB histogram for tonal analysis, and image metadata including pixel dimensions and format.
If you want a starting point fast, Darkroom's eight built-in presets cover the most popular photographic and cinematic looks. Cinema brings high contrast and crushed blacks for a dramatic film feel. Moody pulls down shadows and desaturates for a brooding editorial tone. Vintage lifts shadows, fades colours, and adds grain to simulate aged analogue film. Golden Hour pushes warmth and vibrance for that warm, sun-drenched look.
All presets are fully editable — applying a preset simply sets the sliders to a pre-tuned starting point, and you can fine-tune every value from there. Nothing is locked or destructive.
The split-screen compare mode lets you see your edited version alongside the original simultaneously, with a clear gold divider line. This is invaluable for evaluating whether you've gone too far with a specific adjustment. Switch back to full edited view or full original view at any time with a single click.
When you're happy with your edit, hit Export to download a high-quality JPEG at 95% quality. The filename is saved as darkroom-edit.jpg so you always know which version is the edited one. The entire workflow from opening an image to exporting takes less than a minute.
Darkroom is fully responsive and works on desktop browsers, tablets, and smartphones. On mobile, the adjustments panel slides in as a drawer, keeping the full canvas visible while you work.
